Film-Review: I Did Not "Hate" X-Men Dark Phoenix, But ... (Minor Spoilers Ahead)

#DarkPhoenix was not a "train-wreck" as folks have said it to be, but the reality is, it had already derailed a few movies ago, and quite frankly has been careening along the edges of the cliff since, precariously so, kept on dried land by nostalgia to the first two movies, as far as I had been concerned. And with this last film under the FOX banner, just toppled itself quietly down said side of cliff, and no one cared if it went down in flames, or exploded like the shit-storm in space promised adventures would look like at the beginning of the movie. It was just not worth the invested emotions anymore.

I did not "hate" it, I just got tired of it.

Featured in the clip directly below - in full SPOILER-mode - is the train-attack & final scene, where the promise of the X-MEN and their powers manifest, where Nightcrawler showed us a glimpse of how visceral the character could have been, where the action over-shadowed every else that had gone on before - which quite frankly was utterly fine and welcomed (in my book), because they were simply beyond the "whining", and to me personally had been a bug-bear at the back of my mind, when their mutant powers had always soon to be "surface-level" on the silver screen, but not "destructive" as I remembered their comicbook counterpart was/is ...

I suppose at the end of the day, all the movies failed to address my own expectations of what I felt they "could" be, rather than being able to accept them for what I had seen on screen, being a verocious reader back in my day.

But to be fair, I tried ... I tried to look beyond the comics (calling it "graphic novels" does not elevate the source, the "source" is already MAGNIFICENT, IMHO), but alas I found it wanting. I look back at XMEN 1 and X2, and miss the days of wonder and awe, actually, now replaced by "mutant-fatigue", milking the "outsider"-status like they knew what it meant. What made them unique and special before, leaves them being whiney and self-important at the end. LOGAN was whiney too, I admit, but it dripped pathos and sentimentality, deepening the "human"-divide, and took the time to laugh at itself (the X-Men comicbook sequences were GOLD), and gave me - a normal, frail and flawed "human being" - able to identify with the emotions, the heartache, and shed tears without the need or assistance of super-hero spandex. What the viewer received, was the emotions they had invested into the characters thru its various films and impressions of the mutant, I felt.

#DarkPhoenix failed to inspire, or give aspiration to the viewers, and all we received in return at the end, was "regret".

It's okay if you do not agree with me, is not worth spending the time arguing over as well. There's the Honest Trailer to watch, and buyables on Amazon, so enjoy :)

Comparatively, I happened to watch the 2018 documentary "Chris Claremont's X-Men" (Watch/Buy here on Amazon) at nearly the same time actually right after Dark Phoenix, back-to-back, and enjoyed it immensely, as it spoke directly to my comicbook geek-boy inside of me, and wondered where that had all went with Dark Phoenix closing up the celluloid chapter ... but perhaps it was as what had "happened" to Claremont, when it stopped being a tale of "humans and mutants", and easily became a property to be commercialised and hawked-off with multiple foil covers, much like the mutiple costumesd X-Men standing around, waiting for their turn to showcase their powers, and their failures, which perhaps understandably was what the Xavier Insititue did not teach: "working together as a team".

Honest Trailers Does "X-Men: Dark Phoenix"

I honestly cannot say I "hated it", although I would say I had been "disappointed", but ultimately I was not "surprised" this went they way it did, which I would simply call "Mutants Fatigue", an I think I am being exceedingly "kind". But hey, that's just me! Buy the Xmen: Dark Phoenix via Amazon below, thanks! Meanwhile, Moving on...!

May 13th is X-MEN DAY (#XmenDay)

I didn't know there was a "X-MEN DAY"? Celebrating the launch of tickets on sale for DARK PHOENIX, and probably the end of the X-Men license (hur), 20th Century Fox has since declared May 13th to be "X-Men Day", and we have a Twitterful of homage art and flashback visuals and testimonies.

Shown up top is artist Adam Kubert taking a look back at the iconic imagery and incredible creative team behind the 90s run of X-MEN - AKA "comicbook source", while directly below is "The X-Men Legacy" from 20th Century FOX, which looks back at the celluloid incarnations thru the years, in anticipation of the June 7th U.S. premiere for "Dark Phoenix", cheers.

As "corny" as it seems on the surface, the reality is that it is a literal end of an "era", as the merry band of mutants return to Marvel (courtesy of being purchased by Disney), and we will see a brand new generation of X-Men on screen in the future, quite literally after "Dark Phoenix". Even if "New Mutants" ever get released on screen, they will also be brand new faces previously unseen in the franchise with FOX, so that might be an interesting "starting point", if ever Disney decides to do so ... no doubt the MCU has their own cinematic plans, so we'll see what incarnation greets us in the future ...

"Dark Phoenix" versus "Magneto" in this 14-seconder tv spot for DARK PHOENIX, what is to be the last film in the X-Men celluloid saga, after which the license reverts back to Marvel/Disney. And "technically", the OTHER X-Men related film "New Mutants" is set to be released via Disney, so ... all these "complications" will come to an end soon :)

"Dark Phoenix" International Trailer

Thanks to Superherohype, we have a heads about this "International Trailer" for DARK PHOENIX (*in addition to the latest official trailer) - which essentially chronicles the evolution of Jean Grey and the ultimate "creation" of the "Dark Phoenix". At this celluloid juncture, I am all about seeing more X-Men killed off, because everything feels like a re-thread - understandably "rebooted" - with the flaccid stakes appealling only to me because this is coming all to an end with Fox, to be absolutely honest.

DARK PHOENIX Official Trailer Has Dropped! (#RIPMystique?)

And while this was the "teaser", released and featured here today, is the official Trailer for "DARK PHOENIX" = 20th Century FOX's last movie with our favourite mutants-in-tights, before they return to Marvel, under the Disney fold!

Just looking at the footage here (#RIPMystique?), it gives me hope that perhaps the filmmakers will be able to fully show the super-powers these characters possess, beyond the playground displays in past movies, IMHO. And while Yes, I am indeed spoilt by "One Punch Man" (:p), wouldn't it be wonderful of FOX could have shown viewers how excitingly powerful these characters are, so that folks could wish they were in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be able to stop Thanos? How wonderful of a bird-flip would that be? MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA .... hey, I love Marvel movies too, okay? :p

"In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite -- not only to save Jean's soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

In U.S. Theaters June 7, 2019

Written and Directed by: Simon Kinberg

Produced by: Simon Kinberg, Hutch Parker, Lauren Shuler Donner, Todd Hallowell

Cast: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain."

#XMen's DARK PHOENIX Poster Release

In anticipation of a NEW (second) trailer for DARK PHOENIX (drops somewhen Wednesday, U.S. time), comes the release of a new POSTER (featured above), which appeared after a "leaked" poster image (featured below / sans text) floated thru the www earlier.

And while I adored the first two films (directed by Bryan Singer), subsequent offerings had kept me on the fence ... but with the recent news of X-Men leaving FOX and "returning" to Marvel, I am looking forward to seeing the current incarnation, in a sort of closure to the years of "celluloid X-Men" I have been familiar with, at the very least on my -Men on Film fan-blog :)

SYNOPSIS: "In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey.
